JP221 Bb Clarinet

The new JP221 clarinets have been completely redesigned from the ground up. They are made from ABS, but have an appearance very similar to that of genuine grenadilla wood and have a rich dark sound to encourage the less experienced player.

These models are lightweight, strong and easy to clean - perfect for even very young players. Visually it is very attractive with smart contemporary design, silverplated body rings, neat keywork and a graceful bell curve uncluttered by the normal (unnecessary) ring. State of the art engineering has been used. The tone holes are all CNC cut and the tuning scale is very accurate. The silverplated keywork is very strong and precise so it feels good under the fingers and will be reliable for years to come. This clarinet is mounted with double fish skin pads which ensure excellent sealing and longevity.

To maximise comfort, it is equipped as standard with an adjustable thumb rest for correct and comfortable positioning (and a neck strap ring in case a sling is required).

"Buying a student clarinet has changed a lot over the last couple of decades. Once it was a familiar choice between Buffet, Yamaha, Jupiter and a handful others, but recent years have seen an influx of mass-produced instruments from China. The first of these were no match for the established models, relying solely on the fact that they were shockingly cheap. However, as the years passed, manufacturers slowly started producing instruments that could give the leading brands a run for their money.

I have no idea whether the JP221 is manufactured in China, but it fits this general storyline nevertheless. A few years ago I reviewed an early version of the JP221 for MT; it was cheap and promising but also somewhat flawed. Now, Taunton-based wind and brass specialist John Packer Ltd have worked carefully with their manufacturer (who I would guess is based in China) to develop a new version of the JP221 – not really recognisable as related to the earlier model, and much improved for it.

Anyone who has been handling student clarinets for more than a few years will tell you that production values in this category have generally gone up, and the JP221 is no exception. This instrument gives an impression of quality, from the smart back case with detachable rucksack straps to the smooth wood-effect body and shiny silver-plated keys. Additionally, the design of the JP221 gives a pleasing feeling of individuality – not bad at this price point.

To play, the JP221 lives up to its exterior. The instrument I was sent had been superbly set up and was convincingly airtight – not always a given with student clarinets. The intonation was secure and the tone was full and even, giving little suggestion that this is plastic clarinet. The mouthpiece supplied was ample for the job, and the instrument also responded well with my own mouthpiece.

For readers who are wondering why I can’t offer any negatives, the reason is that there aren’t really any. For nearly £100 less than the market-leading Buffet B12, this instrument should definitely be among those you try before you buy."
  • Author: Bethan Edwards : Bethan is a graduate of the RNCM who combines running a busy music department in a Manchester secondary school
"In September I found myself faced with a new challenge – being a Newly Qualified Teacher in charge of running a music department at an inner city school in Manchester with scores of children desperate to learn a musical instrument. Faced with a limited budget I spent a lot of time researching which instruments I should purchase and immediately thought of John Packer, having invested in one of their flutes for teaching purposes last year.

The John Packer JP221 met my two most important criteria – it’s fairly indestructible and it isn’t too expensive. When testing the clarinet I was impressed by its open, clear tone and how free blowing it is. It plays comfortably in tune and the sound projects nicely.

Coming in a sturdy black fabric-covered case, my pupils didn’t seem embarrassed to be seen with their new instrument. This may not sound like an important feature but having had pupils in the past hiding cases to protect their street cred, the John Packer clarinet case passes the coolness test. It has a suitably sized accessory pocket, and straps which mean it can be converted into a backpack. Although I didn’t want to test it, the case seems solid enough to protect the clarinet if dropped. If only it came with a GPS tracker for the child who will inevitably leave it on the tram….!

The clarinet itself has an ABS/wood-effect body and silver-plated key work that appears very shiny. The key work is ergonomically designed and fits agreeably under the fingers, which is really important for beginners. I have to teach First Access (the old Wider Opportunities) clarinet to whole Year 3 (7-8 years old) classes at once, and although there will inevitably be problems with their fingers being big enough to cover the holes, this clarinet seems more small-child friendly than others I have seen. The JP221 is also very lightweight which is essential for the younger clarinettist. The thumb rest is adjustable and has a loop that a sling could be attached to. I did find that the thumb rest was very easy to unscrew and this did happen a few times when I was road-testing the clarinet – I think I would have preferred it to be a fixed thumb rest; re-screwing a thumb rest whilst teaching thirty young clarinettists at once is an challenging task. I had similar problems with the ligature – children have a habit of unscrewing ligatures (despite scary Miss Edwards’s warnings) and I found these difficult to reassemble once the screws had been taken out.

On the whole, I was impressed with the quality of the instrument and would not hesitate to buy some more for my beginner pupils to learn on. The JP221 fulfils all the criteria I look for in a beginner instrument and I am confident that it would set a young clarinettist on the path to success."
