JP222 Bb Bass Clarinet

The JP222 is a high performing yet reliable Bb bass clarinet and offers an improved playing performance to its student level counterpart, the JP122. With excellent tonal response across all registers but particularly in those tricky areas over the break, this instrument has drawn a great deal of interest from those that had previous dismissed non-wooden instruments. Leslie Craven, teacher at the RWCMD and clarinettist in the Welsh National Opera reviewed the JP222 saying "I would certainly buy one – and I would be proud to play it". With extended access to low C, the JP222 is a favourite amongst music colleges and training bands and is a staple within the UK education sector.

The JP222 Bb Bass Clarinet is constructed from a lightweight yet highly resonant ABS Resin and features a full system, silver plate keywork including Low C. A playing spike is included as standard to increase comfort when playing.

  • Author: Leslie Craven - Teacher at the RWCMD and clarinettist in the Welsh National Opera.
"I was skeptical when I heard Andy telling me they were excited about the Bass, as I have tried other non-wooden Bass clarinets before with key work that bends easily and goes out of synchronisation at the drop of a hat. This JP222 is not one of those bendy beasts. The key work is robust enough to take professional punishment (all instruments should of course be treated with care and proper maintenance) and I gave it a thorough work - out. I compared it to a famous brand Bass clarinet made of wood which costs almost four times as much. The result of the comparison was really revealing.

The wooden clarinet had a duller less vibrant, slightly more focused sound but I found myself more and more attracted to the vibrant ringing warm sound of the hard rubber instrument. I am no stranger to this material which some leading clarinet designers claim resonates better than wood. I have a pair of hard rubber clarinets as a spare pair and love the free blowing feel of them and their vibrant warm sound. The sound of the Bass in this case is instantly appealing and dark yet has many harmonics in the sound. The tuning is very stable and being made of hard rubber the instrument did not vary in pitch after it had warmed up, as much as its wooden counterpart did.

The combination of reliable key work and stability in intonation plus a beautiful sound was a winner for me. Throat notes were clear and the key configuration was eminently sensible, enabling the most difficult low C, D, D sharp combination passages to be played easily. There was less resistance in the bore than on the wooden instrument so this gave me the impression that it was less hard work to play than the wooden instrument. All in all the quality of this instrument shone through – giving the lie to the myth that instruments made in China are cheap replicas.

This one for sure is well built, robust and given care and maintenance would last for a career. If I was starting out again I would certainly buy one – and I would be proud to play it – as I once did years ago in London Orchestras and on many recording sessions and in London shows such as Phantom and Aspects of love. In summary - If I had to choose which instrument to buy – it would be clear to me that the JP version of the Bass clarinet is definitely the best value for money and enables those with limited budgets to buy a Bass that is capable of competing in sound and intonation with the best and most expensive brands.

The case for the JP222 is very robust and will stand a lot of punishment. There will always be those purists who will want the prestige and possibly slightly more projection of the expensive wooden version of the bass but I think this JP version would certainly project easily enough in an orchestral situation and also deliver a warmer sound than its wooden counterpart. So, if you are on a limited budget – this instrument must be for you – and also – it has the added benefit that it will never crack. Bass clarinets do sometimes crack and when they do they can be expensive to fix and in some cases do not respond the same after cracking – especially if the crack has transgressed into a tone hole. Well done JP – again you have come up with a winner and it is refreshing to work with a company that listen to the criticisms of professionals and have taken on board previous comments about key work etc. and rectified them so efficiently with this ground breaking new design."
