JP263 RATH Bb/F Compensating French Horn

The JP263 RATH is a fully compensating Bb/F French Horn designed and manufactured in collaboration with Michael Rath of Rath Trombones. Michael Rath is highly regarded for his trombone designs, but what is less well known is that he spent ten years working with Paxman’s making French Horns. Rath instruments are renowned for the build quality and high level of finish on their instruments and the JP263 RATH is no different. Featuring an exclusively designed Rath leadpipe, the JP263 RATH incorporates many other sophisticated Rath design elements and draws on Michael's collective experience at Paxman and at Rath creating custom instruments for some of the world's more demanding players. The JP263 RATH provides a compensating French Horn that is affordable to students but that delivers performance that challenges models many times its price.

The JP263 RATH has been well received by the industry with many hailing it as offering superior value compared to many of the more well established makers. Chris Morley of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra described it as "a very attractive instrument for someone graduating from a mini-horn perhaps even taking the student as far as Grade Vlll. A very good value instrument."

The JP263 RATH is constructed from high grade 80:20 brass throughout and includes an exclusive Rath designed leadpipe. As you would expect from an instrument at this level, the JP263 RATH includes neoprene valve bumpers, a mechanical (ball & socket) linkage and bell ring. The JP263 RATH also includes an adjustable and reversible Bb/F lever for those who prefer the horn to stand in Bb rather than F.

Customer Reviews

  • Author: Chris Morley - French Horn in Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
"My first impressions are really good. It is a well-presented horn in a sturdy yet lightweight case which has both a shoulder strap and rucksack straps. The horn is well balanced and light which is ideal for the younger player. Physically the horn is quite small with a compact left hand position. The valves are particularly good; the mechanical action is precise giving a very positive feel. A water key comes as standard. The horn produces a good, full sound over the whole range, the lowest notes needing a bit more effort, which is typical of a compensating instrument. The dynamic range is very even with quiet playing easy especially in the middle and high registers. The intonation is secure in all registers making the notes straightforward to slot into place. The JP263RATH would be a very attractive instrument for someone graduating from a mini-horn perhaps even taking the student as far as Grade Vlll. A very good value instrument."
