The JP274 is a high-performing fully compensating Bb euphonium suitable for serious students and musical professionals alike.
The JP274 features a fully compensating system enabling players to more accurately tune their playing. The instrument also includes an 12" bell for greater projection and a full, dark sound.
The JP274 is constructed from yellow brass throughout and is available in a lacquer or silver plate finish. Bottom sprung valves ensure a smooth and free action and the 12" bell and 14.72mm (.580'') bore enable players to achieve a warm and rounded sound.
As part of my job I recently had the pleasure of appraising 3 of the superior John Packer euphoniums on behalf of our students. All were striking examples of the modern style of instrument design as well as displaying a high quality of build. Added to this the fantastic prices being asked and they almost seem too good to be true. So to the testing…….
The first on trial was the JP274, presumably aimed at the progressing young player. It is a fully compensating 4 valve instrument, with a robust feel to not only the euphonium, but its case too which is of solid manufacture with handily placed wheels on the base for ease of transport. It has a very ‘centred’ feel when blowing across the full range and responds with ease in all registers. I have no hesitation in recommending this model to any of my students hoping to take their music making to a higher level.
I recently purchased this euphonium. Everything about it is what I was looking for, it has a great warm, dark, full tone quality, smooth valve action, and is compensating. Probably my favorite part about the JP274(s) is the sound of the instrument. The tone is incredible, perfect for soloists like myself. On top of that, it has a 12" bell that helps me produce a big sound. Like I stated before, it has a warm, dark, full, fulfilling tone quality. The compensating system is super helpful, I immediately noticed a change in intonation in my low register. There are really no cons about this instrument that I can think of.
Really solid build, excellent intonation, solid case.
Standard sharp 6th harmonic (high F) seen in almost all euphoniums
The harmonics are good up to the 9th harmonic (high high C) where they no longer seem to exist. However, since this is targeted at beginners, this should not be too big of a problem.
However, the tone is not centred enough and has a lot of room to bend the note.
Otherwise, a great instrument for an advanced beginner.
The JP274 is supplied with a mouthpiece and a high quality hard case. The case is well built and sturdy ensuring maximum protection for the instrument in all settings, whether in a school storage cupboard or being transported to and from lessons.
